So I woke up early, but without the aid of an alarm. Sun was pouring in my window and the birds were tweeting outside (seems everyone's got phones these days!) - too early for a joke?
I woke up in a good mood, let's just say that. Got breakfast, dressed at a leisurely pace, then sat down with my laptop, and just typed. Some was from paper notes, other portions straight onto the screen from imagination. Then a touch of spell checking, bit of twitter promoting ect. Pretty much spent the day just writing, which is not something I've done for a while, and so was nice to do.
I think it's that thing, if you can get in the zone and just concentrate on one task, and it's got your undivided attention then you just go full steam at it. I have to admit I used to be a bit of a multi-tasker, full on prided myself on it. I'd do anything between 2 and 10 things at once some times. I'd start something then wander off, do something else, then start another thing before finishing the first two things.
Best example would be from last Christmas, always a busy time when I try to focus on a million things at once. So one Saturday morning I think 'right today is present wrapping day!' I got all the gifts out, arranged in piles for each person, paper and ribbon all laid out too, then the usual happens, I go in search of scissors and don't come back to the pile of crimbo presents for 5hours!
How can that be, I hear you say, well I shall tell you. So I simply went to go and find scissors, then I find them dirty, probably used in the kitchen at some point. But while rising them off, I think well while I'm here I might as well just do the washing up, and once that's done but not dried, I think, I'm a bit hungry, I might grab a sandwich. So I abandon the drying up and got myself a spot of lunch.
Of course if you're having a snack you might as well put your feet up and watch a bit of t.v. - of course an hour later, food finished, I'm still sat there bingeing on a series. Lunch done, I pop my plate out to the kitchen and realise I should probably put the now dried cutlery away. But in the middle of this I open a cupboard and see we're running low on a few food bits, so an online food shop begins.
Anyway you get the idea, I filtered from task to task, not completing one whole thing in one sitting, but scooting back and forth between many things, probably taking far more time than if I'd simply concentrated on the job at hand. But after the food shop, a stint on Facebook, popping out to see a friend and then giving the lounge a big tidy up. I wander upsides to find the unwrapped Christmas presents looking all forlorn, in the same state I left them in hours before. But with this task now awaiting me for the following day, I slip into bed, exhausted from a day of - multi-tasking!
