New research has found that reading for as little as 6 minutes can cut your stress levels by up to 2/3rd's, but why is this, is it because you're doing something you enjoy? Well there is that, but it's also all down to concentration, by focusing your mind on this one task and getting yourself lost in the world within the pages, helps relax muscles in the body like the heart and shoulders.
So is it all down to escapism? Whether it be a wondrous fantasy land filled with laughter and joy, or a gritty murder mystery which throws up a red herrings at every turn. Is the lure of tripping off to a world which is even a little bit different from our own, and leaving our worries behind for a little while really the easiest way to relax?
Apparently it is, but it's more than just leaving your stresses behind, by reading you're not only creating a distraction for your busy mind which, let's face it, is probably buzzing at a million miles an hour, but your stimulating your imagination, and opening up creativity which helps you reach a high state of consciousness. In essence the world you're reading about is being built in your brain so that even if you put the book down and shut your eyes you could see the fiction world as a memory as easy as if you'd been there.
So it's proven, by getting your read on you're not only helping reduce your stress levels but expanding your mind too, and what can be better than that?
Remember novels and short stories are best, so flicking through that gossip mag, or skimming that online news article probably wont give you the same effect, but in the end it's up to you how you get your literary fix. Happy reading guys!
